Lumbar Spine Procedures
The lumbar spine refers to the lower area of the spine between the pelvis and thoracic cage. It is made up of 5 vertebrae (although some people may have 6) that are stacked on top of each other with cushion-like intervertebral discs in between. The lower back is the largest movable segment of the vertebral column and is extremely vulnerable to disorders, making it the source of many pain complaints. A herniated disc, also referred to as a bulging, ruptured or slipped disc, is one that protrudes into the spinal canal and applies pressure to a nerve root. A herniated lumbar disc can cause pain in the back and all the way down the legs and feet. About 90% of herniated discs occur in the lumbar spine. Treatment for a herniated disc includes anti-inflammatory medication, physical therapy and steroid injections. Surgery is not usually required.
Lumbar Spinal Stenosis
As a result of age, intervertebral discs often become less spongy and smaller in height. The decreased support of these discs can cause the spinal cord to narrow and compress the surrounding nerves, causing pain and weakness in the lower back and legs. Lumbar spinal stenosis occurs most frequently in older patients, and can be a result of arthritis. This condition can be treated with medications, steroids or physical therapy. More severe conditions often require surgery.
Trauma to the lumbar spine are usually the result of a fall or motor vehicle accident. Trauma to this area usually causes a compression fracture and the injury most frequently occurs at the thoracolumbar junction. A CT scan, ultrasound or radiograph is often used to determine the result of the trauma and the best treatment option. Treatment depends on the severity and location of the injury but can include pain medication, physical therapy or surgery.
Spinal deformities usually appear in the form of curves in the spine. They can be a result of a birth defect, trauma or other spine disease such as scoliosis. Treatment for spinal deformities can include medication, a spinal brace, physical therapy or surgery.
The cervical spine (neck region) is one of the most important and agile parts of your body. It begins at the base of the skull and consists of 7 bones separated by intervertebral discs that allow the spine to move freely. The neck has the greatest amount of movement of any area of the spine and is also responsible for protecting the spinal cord and supporting the skull. Because of its vital function in our everyday lives, injury or disease of the cervical spine is a very serious condition. Herniated Disc and Degeneration
Intervertebral discs in between the bones of the vertebrae help to cushion the bones and allow for smooth and painless movement. Symptoms can arise when part of the disc material begins to protrude, known as a disc herniation, or when the disc begins to change, known as disc degeneration. These conditions can cause neck pain that also radiates down the arm and weakness or numbness in the shoulder, arm or hand, as the different vertebrae cervical spine affects these areas. The pain comes from the affected disc putting pressure on a specific nerve root which determines where the pain is felt. Treatment for a herniated or degenerated disc includes immobilization of the neck, anti-inflammatory medication, physical therapy or surgery.
Cervical Spinal Stenosis
As spinal degeneration occurs naturally with age, bone spurs may form and cause the spinal canal to become smaller. These bone spurs press on the spinal cords or nerve roots and cause symptoms similar to that of a herniated disc, except that the pressure is applied to the entire spinal cord. This condition can also be known as cervical myelopathy. Pain can spread from the neck and back all the way down the arms and legs. It can also cause a loss of control and strength in the arms and legs. Surgery is the only effective treatment in relieving pressure on the spinal cord.
Cervical deformities can be congenital or a result of trauma, other spine diseases or surgery complications. These deformities occur when the cervical spine curves forward. Cervical deformities can cause neck pain and a reduced range of motion, but can lead to paralysis if it is severe and left untreated. Physical therapy or surgery can help correct cervical deformities.
